Seventh Rule to release Coffinworm Gatefold LP


Seventh Rule is proud to announce the forthcoming release of the vinyl edition of Coffinworm’s 'When All Became None.' This gatefold LP release will be available in a limited pressing of 500 copies and packaged in an old-school "Tip-On" style jacket manufactured by Stoughton Printing, with vinyl mastering and manufacturing being handled by RTI. This will be licensed exclusively from Profound Lore Records (YOB, LUDICRA, YAKUZA,) with a projected release for this slab o' filth in mid-August. Indianopolis's Coffinworm caught my attention the old fashioned way; they released a great three song demo as their debut. With song titles like "High On The Reek Of Your Burning Remains", and a brutal, ugly sound to match, there was no way that the demo EP Great Bringer Of Night wasn't going to win me over instantly. After hearing that Sanford Parker was going to produce their full length, I obviously had high expectations for this release. "Start Saving For Your Funeral", the sample track they previewed on their Myspace awhile back, with its dare-I-say "catchy" verses and infectious off-kilter melodies, left no doubt in my mind that this album was going to go for the jugular.

These guys reside solidly within the Unearthly Trance school of sludge. They mix thick doomy riffs with more higher register chunks of six string noise, and a harsh, aggressive vocal style. The black metal and punk influences are clearly also there, but not as much D-beat, and they lean much more heavily on the death metal side of things, which is always welcome in my book. The tempos range from a snail's crawl to a mid-paced groove, with a few faster sections as well for good measure. There are a lot of different elements and influences going on, but what it all really boils down to is this: if it's ugly but awesome, it's in there.

Like I mentioned above, the songs have good hooks that are instantly accessible and memorable. They aren't quite as melodic as latter day Unearthly Trance, but with riffs like the one from "Spitting In Infinity's Asshole", with it's swirling, repetitive psych doom swagger, they don't need to be. The vocals also aren't as melodic, but they're just as intense in their range, from high pitched howling yells to guttural growls, all within the space of the same breath. Powerful stuff to say the least, and Sanford's production as always brings just enough clarity to give the tones and atmospheres maximum weight.

This is already shaping up to be a great year for heavy music, and this is one of the best heavy releases I've heard thus far. Definitely add it to your "must have" list, this is a serious top ten contender, even with a slew of big names still lined up to release later on in the year. For fans of Unearthly Trance, Coffins, Middian, and Cavity, this is highly recommended.

You don't find metal this sludgy outside of New Orleans. Except in Indiana, where the fearsome fivesome Coffinworm shit out tar-thick doom even viler than Eyehategod's. Gates of Slumber drummer Bob Fouts was behind the boards on this three-track demo, and the tones he captured sound like mics were placed directly into the Indianapolis sewage system -- every sputum rivulet and feedback-drenched chug rubs the ears the wrong way, which is to say the exact right way. On "High on the Reek of Your Burning Remains," Coffinworm set queasy treble guitar skree, drawn from the haunting arpeggios of Norwegian black metal, against swinging doom riffs. It's a truly ominous, hateful effect. Coffinworm are set to record their first full-length with Sanford Parker (Minsk/Nachtmystium/Indian). It'll come out next year via Profound Lore, which sets the label's awesome band percentage at a healthy 100%.

The Cracked Skull is not another online music review site, but Coffinworm's (Indianapolis, Indiana) demo, 'Great Bringer of Night', is just the kind of homegrown demo worth tracking down and listening to repeatedly at a suitable volume hoping for brown note bliss. The various molten hammers being poured through the speakers of your stereo will reaffirm what metal is all about. 'Great Bringer of Night' is heavy in all the right ways: guitars tuned to the depths of the Mariana Trench, gravel throat blaspheming, subversive bass growls, and war drums. Slow, mid tempo, deft time signature changes, and some well placed feedback adds to the churning of this demo. Basically, if the listener's face is suddenly pulverized into dust against the nearest hard surface while listening to this, then the goal of this demo would seemingly be achieved. Recorded at the aptly named Basement Rage Studio in Indianapolis by Bob Fouts, Coffinworm has managed to capture what lies in the blackened hearts and deep recesses of the minds of those whom don't shy away from the dark and shadows. Instead of having one song that sticks out, 'Great Bringer of Night' is best approached in terms of movements. Each song break signaling the next step, the next push into the ground to ultimately end up as a feast for the creeping things that live on the south side of terra firma. This is quite the initial outing for Coffinworm as their debut full length should be out in '10 on Profound Lore Records. Until then, one fist raised and excessive head nodding will suffice while spinning this disk at top volume.

Indianapolis' Coffinworm are an unholy combination of Deathspell Omega (evil high-end dissonance) and Eyehategod (don't-give-a -fuck bludgeoning). A blackened Unearthly Trance, perhaps?
